It's good to drive forward in a manical fashion, but as you point out, it's also good to pause and look back on how far you've come in life. Doing so at this concert must have revealed a pride in your accomplishments and happiness at a life well on its way to becoming a classic.

I also think that you appreciate the nice things in life a bit more when you know what it was like to not have those things. You probably appreciate a good meal, a relaxing nap or a fresh breeze at the ocean if you did not always have those things to enjoy.

"Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death." Anais Nin

You describe the drive, the passion to reach a goal that very few people in this country have any more. You'll run into people who think you are crazy, that you should give up and get a corporate job. You'll find yourself alone at times, wondering what the hell you're doing it for. Whether it's your house or your marriage or your career, others who don't have similar drive are jealous. They will try to knock you down. Or, your own tiredness after a 16 hour day will do it for you.

I see people from China and India who come to the US with the drive that is missing in most of Americans. These guys are out of their element, surrounded by people who look at them funny. But, they keep pushing. They work hard, getting degrees, developing technology and providing leadership. They want to go back home one day, but they know that while they are here, they must work hard to reach the goals they've set for themselves.

Tom Peters recommends that we surround ourselves with people who are similarly driven to reach a goal, rather than hanging out with those who bring us down. I think that's a great idea.

Dan read your blog and I just did. Hey, I did "put the finger up the nose" in life by getting married! As I change my name on Social Security, passport, credit cards, etc.. the finger goes up deeper. How's that for commitment!
Still can't do the finger for real though. That's your job :-)

Great blog.
